Soil Nailing is similar
to ground anchoring in that it involves the grouting of a bare or corrosion protected
reinforcing tendon into a usually predrilled hole in the mass to be stabilised.
Soil nails, however, are
not prestressed but rather remain passive till movement of the soil mass mobilises
the tensile capacity of the reinforcing tendon and the bond stress between the
soil and tendons grout encapsulation.
This technique is usually
used in combination with a slope face protection system which may be reinforced
sprayed concrete, geogrid, vegetation supporting membranes or vegetation itself
together with horizonal or shallow inclined slope drainage measures.
